Shambhaji (1680-1689)

  • After Shivaji's death, a succession struggle broke out between two sons, Shambhaji and Rajaram, who were born to Shivaji's two wives.
  • Shambhaji succeeded Rajaram to the throne on 20 July 1080 who was arrogant, angry and indulgent. At the time of his death. Shivaji had Shambhaji imprisoned in the Fort of Panhala.
  • Shambhaji appointed the North Indian Brahmin poet Kalash as the supreme officer of the administration.
  • In 1681 AD. Aurangzeb's rebel son Sultan Muhammad Akbar was given shelter by Shambhaji.
  • On 11 March 1689, Aurangzeb murdered Shambhaji and captured his capital Rajgarh and arrested his son Shahu and wife Yesubai and imprisoned them in the Raigarh Fort
